Beetroot Seeds
Grown in our cottage garden, these deep ruby beetroot are chosen for their sweet flavour and reliable growth. A lovely old favourite for hearty suppers, pickling jars, and little harvest baskets through the autumn.
SOWING
Sow March - July
Soak seeds for 30 minutes beforehand to help germination.
Beetroot dislike being moved, so sow directly outside in a sunny spot with light, stone-free soil.
Sow seeds around 3cm deep in rows 30cm apart and keep the soil lightly moist while germinating. Seedlings usually appear within 2–3 weeks.
Once large enough to handle, thin seedlings to around 10cm apart so roots have room to grow.
GROWING
Beetroot are easy little plants and do not need lots of fussing. Water during very dry weather, but avoid overwatering as this encourages leafy tops instead of good roots.
Keep the area free from weeds so young plants do not have to compete for space and goodness from the soil.
HARVEST
You can begin harvesting once the roots are around golf-ball size, or leave them longer for larger beets.
For a longer harvest, lift every other beetroot first and leave the remaining plants with extra room to continue growing.
Both the roots and young leaves can be enjoyed in the kitchen.
Approximate number of seeds per packet: 60
